At the home of Charley and Myra Brock it's a celebration for their ten years of marriage.

Chris and Ken are the first to arrive and are faced with a gruesome spectacle: Charley is in his room, shot and unconscious, no trace of Myra.

Suspecting an attempted suicide and uncertain what to do, they prefer not to leak the news fearing the scandal: Charley is the deputy mayor of New York!

With the arrival of the other guests, however, keeping it hidden is increasingly difficult. To mask the absence of the two guests Ken and Chris invent lies after lies, but to add to the confusion there are the gossip (the "rumors" of the title) that circulate not only about the hosts, but also about all the other guests.

When the truth is finally revealed to the other guests, no one is able to find an explanation for what happened and further complicating things will be  the police , who came to the scene for investigations.
